2020.09.21 17:14 BlueIsRetarded Help me build a cheapaf PC please :3

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
As many virtual machines running either Ubuntu or Windows7/10 (more than likely Ubuntu) as possible, the two programs I'm looking to run on each machine use around 200MB RAM.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
£200
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
As soon as possible
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)
Tower and everything that goes inside it.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Will be buying online as much as I can. Will be having the products delivered to London, England.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I'm not sure what this question is asking, I don't currently own any of the parts I'll be using so compatibility is solely up to what you suggest.
If it's asking do I mind second hand, of course I don't with a £200 budget! Only things I want to get new are the mother board and Power Supply Unit.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Nope
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
A powerful CPU (preferably with lots of cores so I don't have to mess around with vcores)lots of RAM so a motherboard with lots of RAM slots is appreciated!
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I don't care if its a diamond encrusted gold plated case with RGB lighting (within budget) or a Pizza box!
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
So long as it boots I'll deal with the OS.
Extra info or particulars:
Like I said further up, I don't mind 2nd hand with most parts. I also don't mind buying a refurbished PC and upgrading it.

So glad I found this subreddit, I'm useless when it comes to hardware!

Edit: adding this to avoid repeating again in comments
Joyce was arrested in November 2018 over the child abuse video, and police then discovered evidence to suggest he had made other searches for indecent images of children online.
The judge said the background material found by police showed downloading the clip was not an “isolated incident” but “part of a pattern”.
He said police found around 2000 "peer to peer files indicative of downloading or looking at images of child abuse”, dating back to June 2014.

Edit 2:
Mark Shelley, representing Joyce today, told the court: “The pre-sentence report gives his background, his time in the army, time as an MP, then something happened and it all imploded. “A clever, hard-working man, taken to drink, and his life is destroyed by behaviour you have seen in his previous convictions.
Since that time, he has given up drinking, found a partner that he loves, she loves him and they have made a life together.

Sentencing on Friday, Mr Justice Edis said: “You have pleaded guilty to an offence which involves the possession of a category A film of a little less than a minute’s duration.
“That film showed the penetrative sexual abuse of very young children. That these acts of abuse happened is because there are people like you who want to watch these films. If there was no market, those children wouldn’t be subjected to these very serious offences.”
The judge added: “You have sought help from people well able to provide it and there’s evidence before the court that that has had an effect on helping you reduce, perhaps completely, your impulsive behaviour, and that’s happened over a significant period due to the delay in these proceedings.

2020.09.17 13:59 Fentanyl_Butt_Plug When Will PIA bother to update online instructions so that Customers can connect to PIA Via Router, so that the Much Aunted Next Gen VPN will work? (Shoddy Practice)

What a Pity that the settings provided no longer work with routers such as the Asus AC68U running the latest merlin rom.
Worked perfectly until PIA started playing about with UK services and the Much Vaunted Next Gen VPN wiped Manchester, Southampton and London from the Global Map. Manchester and London have reapeared and can be used if utalising PIA proprietaory Gadgets from Redmond, Linux and Android.
Using the supplied files and 2-year-old published instructions do not work. The web page and the Syup[plied p[roduct are NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.
The advice on the PIA website is 2 years out of date and for a merlin rom that is even older.
PIA online support seem to rely upon google to give you none utile advise.
Looks like I'm going to me migrating to another provider that puts technical excellence and utile product over turning a Quick-Buck and having chat "houselves" giving you links to two year old defunct advice and even telling you to seek advise from other PIA customers.
In Europe there are implied terms and conditions under a contract that derive from the PIA website telling you how to get a router working with Merlin - and if PIA are too lazy or disinterested to keep published customer advice up to date that is berach of contracts as well as Ultra Shoddy business practice and customer service.
Does anyone (PIA employee, Competitor, "Man on the Clapham omnibus") have the relevant instructions and required paramaters for the merlin Rom so that the much vaunted and troubelsome Nex Gen VPN will get anywhere near a valid descriptioon under The Sale Of Goods Act 1979 concerning "Quality and Fitness" and actually WORK!
Mulvad looks expensive but a good option.

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

After six months of intermittent or in some cases near-continuous lockdowns, many have reached their limit and uprisings are finally emerging around the world. The last week of August 2020 saw gatherings of tens of thousands of individuals in Berlin,1 London2 and Dublin,3 protesting stay-at-home orders, business closures, mask and vaccine mandates and Bill Gates’ dictatorial grip on public health matters.
In the U.S., a protest took place August 30, 2020, in Boston, Massachusetts, against a new student flu vaccination mandate,4 and in Virginia, protesters gathered September 2 in opposition of unconstitutional COVID-19 mandates.5
These are just a few of the many demonstrations that have taken place in recent weeks around the world, as people are starting to realize their human rights are being stripped away over a virus with a lethality on par with that of seasonal influenza and other pandemic viruses, none of which was responded to with a global shutdown of economies and forced quarantining of healthy individuals.

COVID-19 — A Massive Brainwashing Scheme?

In recent weeks and months, more and more experts have come out sharing what they know about the roles of Big Tech, Big Pharma and global health organizations such as the World Health Organization in the creation of a new technocratic world order.
If you missed my interview with financial analyst Patrick Wood, in which he details the technocratic take-over plan, which has been in play for decades, be sure to review it now. Other articles shedding light on what’s happening behind the scenes include “Harvard Professor Exposes Google and Facebook,” featuring a documentary with professor Shoshana Zuboff, and “Plandemic Part 2.”
When you start to put all the puzzle pieces together, it seems clear this pandemic is being used as a cover story for both a global wealth redistribution scheme, and for the implementation of a technocratic system of totalitarian rule by unelected leaders.
The WHO seems to be part and parcel of this global network. While the U.S. has severed ties with the organization, Big Tech is still promoting the WHO as a final arbiter of which views are acceptable and which are not — medical expertise and scientific achievements be damned.
As reported by Reclaim the Net,6 the WHO eavesdrops on everything you do online, from reviewing your social media interactions to analyzing your emotions. To counteract “spread of misleading information” about the pandemic — which was a key area of focus during Event 201 — the WHO has partnered with an analytics company that uses machine learning analysis to scan more than 1.6 million social media posts per week.
The aim of this “social listening approach”— a nicer term than good old-fashioned spying — is to counteract anything that doesn’t align with the WHO’s current narrative on illnesses, treatments, interventions and causes of disease.
Aiding them in this dystopian censoring process is the United Nations, which has launched an army of 10,000 digital volunteers who troll the internet for “false” information and opposing views.
On top of that, most social media platforms have their own highly biased "fact-checkers" who censor for all they’re worth. Back in April 2020, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, wife of Google product director Dennis Troper, announced they would ban and remove any video from the platform that contradicts the WHO.7
Countless examples of wanton censorship of perfectly valid medical and scientific information across all social media platforms and Google can be found at this point.

Just How Deadly Is COVID-19?

According to groundbreaking data8 recently released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 6% of the total COVID-19-related deaths in the U.S. had COVID-19 listed as the sole cause of death on the death certificate.
Six percent of 169,044 (the total death toll as of September 2) is 10,143. “For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death,” the CDC states. As reported by Rochester First,9 the top underlying medical conditions included influenza, pneumonia, respiratory failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, dementia, heart problems and renal failure.
However, the list also includes 5,424 intentional and unintentional injury and poisoning deaths, so basically, accidents and suicides in which the individual just happened to test positive (or was suspected of being positive for SARS-CoV-2) are also included in the grand total.
(Please note, these data were accurate as of this writing. The CDC does not notate when data is altered as new death certificates come in, so the numbers may therefore be different from what is reported here, depending on when you’re looking at it. For the most up-to-date figures, see the CDC’s website.10)
The fact that only 6% of COVID-19-related deaths are directly attributable to SARS-CoV-2 is bad news when you’re trying to keep a doomsday narrative going. In what appears to be a blatant attempt to minimize exposure of these data, social media platforms have censored many trying to share it.11
As noted by independent news commentator Tim Pool in the video below, fact-checkers are digging into nitpicky semantics in their effort to censor the CDC data, and in so doing, they’re really stretching the “false” claim ultrathin.
https://youtu.be/FkvES1hHWFw
Similar data have emerged from Palm Beach County, Florida, where an investigation by CBS 1212 I-Team revealed only 86 of the reported 658 COVID-19 deaths had “COVID-19 pneumonia” listed as the sole cause of death.
All others had multiple comorbidities, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and dementia. As noted by CBS 12, “Most Palm Beach County COVID deaths cannot be attributed to COVID alone.”
While Dr. Terry Adirim, senior associate dean at the Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine, told the I-Team that “it makes sense to count them [people with comorbid conditions] toward COVID deaths because the virus may have made an otherwise nonfatal illness like a heart condition deadly,” the converse argument can also be made.
Had it not been for them having one or more serious comorbidities, the risk of the virus to these individuals would have been minuscule, and if they got sick at all, they’d probably have survived. So, ultimately, should the virus bear the brunt of the blame?

Infection Fatality Rate on Par With the Flu

Keeping the “killer virus” narrative going much longer is probably going to become even more difficult in light of a September 2, 2020 article13 in Annals of Internal Medicine, which points out that:
“Because many cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are asymptomatic, generalizable data on the true number of persons infected are lacking, and that when calculating mortality rates from confirmed cases, you end up overestimating the infection fatality ratio (IFR).”
The paper reads, in part:14
“To calculate a true infection fatality ratio, population prevalence data are needed from large geographic areas where reliable death data also exist … We combined prevalence estimates from a statewide random sample with Indiana vital statistics data of confirmed COVID-19 deaths.
In brief, our stratified random sample consisted of state residents aged 12 years and older. Known decedents and incarcerated persons were excluded. Because nursing homes were limiting residents' ability to leave and re-enter the facilities, their participation was unlikely.
Participants were tested from 25 April to 29 April 2020 for active viral infection and SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, which would indicate prior infection … We calculated the IFR by age, race, sex, and ethnicity on the basis of the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths as of 29 April 2020, divided by the number of infections.
Although nursing home residents were not tested, they represented 54.9% of Indiana's deaths. Thus, we excluded nursing home residents from all calculations (that is, deaths and infections).
To account for all infections, we added the number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 during the testing period and noninstitutionalized COVID-19 deaths into the denominator …
Our random-sample study estimated 187 802 cumulative infections, to which 180 hospitalizations were added. The average age among all COVID-19 decedents was 76.9 years.
The overall noninstitutionalized infection fatality ratio was 0.26% … Persons younger than 40 years had an infection fatality ratio of 0.01%; those aged 60 or older had an infection fatality ratio of 1.71%. Whites had an infection fatality ratio of 0.18%; non-Whites had an infection fatality ratio of 0.59%.”

2020.09.15 11:05 HopedForMore The Mysterious Fall

Hello, this is the first chapter and I am really keen to know whether it would be enough to entice people to keep reading. Thanks!
"Lillian! Lillian! Grab the rope!" he screamed, but the wind, swooping up and over the cliff top, immediately caught his words and threw them back behind him. Lillian thought she heard something though and strained to look up, fighting to see through the matted hair plastering her forehead. Desperation was enveloping her; she could not hold on much longer, but in the fading light she could just see the knotted end of a rope snaking and bumping down the steep slope, down through the swirling rain towards her, as Walter frantically played it out from eighty feet above. But it kept sticking, getting caught on bits of foliage or scree, forcing him to flick it up and down like a slow whip to dislodge it and move it on. Blinking away the rain, she kept focused on it – it was her only hope now, the only thing that could save her.
Her fingers were painfully numb yet somehow clinging to the crumbled area of wet stone and patchy earth that was the only thing between her and what she knew would be certain death if she let go. But she had very little to grip on to, just the little chunks of solid rock that her scrabbling hands had somehow latched on to, and her left leg hurt so much she feared she must have broken it as she slithered down the steep, wet, chalky cliff slope – the pain was excruciating. On top of that her arms and legs were scratched and bleeding and her palms badly grazed. Below her, the slope became a sheer drop and she could hear the sea lashing the rocks, huge waves exploding in flourishes of spray that whooshed up through the rain in plumes of mist and drenched her in a wet, salty drizzle. She had no energy left to scream; instead tears streamed down her face and merged with the rain as death pulled with increasing force on her shoulder. The rope was coming though, she could see it getting closer now. Twenty feet, ten feet, then, just as it had nearly reached her, as she readied herself to lunge for it in one last all-or-nothing effort, it got caught on a small stubbly plant and stopped again. The delay was enough, her strength was gone. She knew that she could not hold on, and a slow horror overwhelmed her; she knew what was coming.
What should have been a scream came out as a despairing grunt as her left hand slipped from its weakened grasp. Immediately the instant additional weight applied to her right hand jerked it free, and with resigned dismay Lillian watched it let go, as though it belonged to someone else. A million thoughts burst into her head but she just wanted to ignore them and think of nothing. She watched the rope getting smaller and more indistinct and waited for the impact.
Marlo Campbell stopped typing, closed his eyes, and sat still for a moment. He breathed in as deeply as he could, hoping that this would infuse his brain with even more creative energy to help him sustain this storyline. Then again, was he getting a bit carried away with the drama of the incident and introducing too much artistic licence? No, this was such an important element of the story – he had to make it exciting. But it also had to be believable. Where did Walter get that rope? He would have to try and think of a way to explain that. This novel writing business was harder than he thought. He exhaled loudly, opened his eyes and sat back in his cheap old faux-leather swivel chair, allowing it to rock gently and hoping as he always did that the flexes and creaks were not signs that it was about to collapse beneath him.
Rather than generate inspiration, all his breathing-in exercise had done was present him with questions that needed answers. An old cracked biro lay on the desk in front of him, and he picked it up and twirled it in his fingers. Predictably he dropped it and it bounced on the floor and rolled under a side unit. Of course it did, where else would it go? That just about summed up the way his life went really. Well it could stay there, he didn’t care. Something for those little invisible spiders to weave their webs round.
He reached instead for the small, battered object which had become his inspiration. It was a diary, about the size of those Ladybird books he used to read as a child, with a page for each day. The once bright red and gold patterned cover had now faded into a peculiar blotchy crimson, the edges of the pages brown and scuffed. It smelled faintly of times past, like the interior of an antique writing bureau; hints of old leather and mustiness. On the inside cover, in fading black ink, was a carefully written but brief introduction:
1886. This is the private diary of Lillian Jones, of 31 Challenor Street Brighton. Should anyone find themselves reading this, I implore them to return the diary to the above address without reading further. Thank you.
Marlo could imagine Lillian sitting at her bed table as the diary year began, dipping her pen in a small, stained inkwell to write the inscription, a year of empty pages ahead of her, so innocent of the events that were to befall her.
Thereafter was a neatly-written and comprehensive account for every day, meticulously completed right up until Tuesday September 21st, where the entry ended with “I am so happy Walter has invited me out tomorrow, it seems we shall likely go to the sea and take some air! He knows that I have been wanting to stroll along the cliffs and watch the evening sun so I very much hope we might go to Seaford Head.” But September 22nd and every page after that was blank.
He wondered again what Lillian had looked like as a young girl of 20. He had a picture in his mind of a strongly defined yet feminine mouth, a small nose, large dark eyes and curly auburn hair, but the diary did not reflect on the author’s appearance and so it was just intuition influenced by old Victorian portrait photographs he had seen over the years. But having read, over and over again, every word entered in Lillian’s diary for the year 1886, Marlo had subconsciously formed a picture of her in his mind, even though he was well aware that he was just imagining how he wanted her to look and in reality she could look like anybody.
Reading her words, feeling as though she was talking to him as he read them, had given him an idea. More than that, a purpose, something to take him away from all the nagging frustrations of a miserably dull life. He would embellish her diary entries into the story of that year, which when finished would become his first novel; fiction based on fact. English had been his favourite subject at school, and maybe he was now finding his true calling. He’d read loads of books and he knew what clunky writing was, and if he managed to avoid that, at least it shouldn’t be unreadable and who knows, it could sell millions, assuming each copy came with a free diamond or something. Without the diamond, maybe a few dozen if he was lucky, but that didn’t matter.
So, not at this stage worried about sales figures and instead treating it more as a labour of love, he had set to and adapted and expanded on the incidents recorded in the diary up until September 22nd, weaving them into what he had hoped was a historically accurate tale of the life of a young Victorian girl finding her way in life and now discovering romance for the first time. Yes, some might argue that it was unusual for a man to be writing this but he felt a strange affinity with his subject, and anyway in these modern times why should his gender be an issue? He could always ask a girl at work to read through it to make sure he had not made any obvious blunders with regard to the mysterious secrets of the female psyche.
Now he had reached the point that he hoped the reader wouldn’t be expecting - the drama and excitement which was now unfolding. The question he had been wrestling with was whether this was the denouement and his book would rather surprisingly, as far as the reader is concerned, finish with the dramatic death of his heroine, or whether those blank diary pages would instead present him with an opportunity to play out some other scenarios entirely of his own making.
He put the diary down and re-focused his thoughts on the story. He would go back and deal with the issue of the rope later; for now he just wanted to describe what was going to happen to Lillian.
The impact never came. Instead there was a loud ripping sound, and a sudden and frightening deceleration as Lillian brushed past a thorny bush jutting at an unlikely angle from the cliff face, her billowing dress catching on the branches and practically wrenching it from her body, biting into her as it violently halted her descent. Instantly she found herself hanging upside down beneath the bush, her dress virtually ripped to shreds but miraculously still holding her weight as she swung precariously in the wet wind.
Marlo paused again. He had to confirm his decision now; he was prevaricating. He didn’t want to go there..... but he had to do it. She would have to die that night. But once Lillian had died, was that it? Would the story just end there? No, there had to be more. The trick was in not just entertaining the reader with an exciting finale, but also making them feel that reading the book had been worthwhile and the ending hadn’t been a disappointment or a cop-out. Or just depressing.
He looked at the diary again, hoping without reason that it would give him some inspiration on how to do this, how also he could then perhaps complete the story through the rest of that year to explain the impact of her death and how her family, as well as Walter, learned to cope without her. Sure, that sounded about as exciting as a paper plate of stale bread on a plastic table, but that was the challenge: to throw the ingredients into the literary word mixer in his head and somehow emerge with a plate of exquisite chocolate truffles that everyone would coo over.
The diary had come from his father’s house. He had spent countless weekends travelling down to the outskirts of Brighton to clear out the small terraced house after his father died of a sudden heart attack two years ago, and had found the diary stored in a bureau amongst some old photographs. Why it was there was something he had yet to establish. His mother had died of cancer when he was fourteen, an event he had never really recovered from and which made the death of his Dad all the more shattering. With no brothers or sisters and just a few other distant relatives, he didn’t really have anyone else to query the diary with. He’d spoken to a few of his father’s friends at the funeral but none of them knew. Maybe Dad had got it with a box of books in a boot sale – boot sales had become a bit of a hobby for him in his later years.
As soon as Marlo started reading it, though, he felt a connection, an involvement, and he knew he could not just leave it there. Who was Lillian Jones? What kind of life had she led up to the point at which she had started her diary? Why did she write the diary? What was her life like? He felt he needed to know, but wasn’t sure why it felt so important to him. Maybe it was because this was history coming to life, not a dry school lesson. Perhaps it was because he was quite possibly the first person to read it all, other than her.
So he had made some initial investigations and found Lillian’s name on the 1881 census: she was born in 1866 to Thomas William Jones, a milliner, and his wife Mary. She had two younger siblings, William and Alice, and an older brother, Frederick. Marlo already knew from Lillian’s descriptions in the diary that five years later, Frederick would have left the family home to find lodgings of his own closer to where he worked, down by the seafront. Lillian had written that he was an enterprising young man who had persuaded a wealthy customer of his parents, a boat builder, to go into business with him, taking advantage of Brighton’s growing reputation as a tourist resort to manufacture and rent out bathing huts on the beach. They were those wooden boxes on big wheels, looking a bit like a poor man’s mini stagecoach, which the wealthy used to protect their modesty when bathing in the sea. It was hard work, especially in the summer, but was also rewarding and he was doing very well for himself. He had also been stepping out with the boat builder’s daughter for the last year, with signs that a marriage proposal was not far away. He helped out on the boat manufacturing side himself during the winter months, so Lillian and the family were very happy for him and proud of his achievements despite seeing so little of him now.
At the time of the census, and indeed when the diary was written, Lillian lived with the rest of her family above the shop at 31 Challenor Street, Brighton. However, a check of the 1891 and 1901 census records revealed no mention of Lillian. Intrigued, he had spent an afternoon at the National Archives in Kew trawling through death certificates and eventually found what he had somehow hoped he would not find, yet which still shocked him.
Lillian Jones had died unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 22nd, 1886, the day the diary entries stopped.
The death certificate showed the cause of death as ‘accident’ and gave no clues as to what had befallen her. She was just one of many people who lived, died, and were forgotten in the sinking sands of inconsequential history.
This suddenness of her death was a horrible discovery and Marlo was dismayed and saddened that a girl he thought he had come to know, even if it was only through nine months of her thoughts, had died so young. Such a waste. But he resolved that Lillian would not be forgotten, and he now wanted to know what happened on that fateful September day in 1886 – the last day of her tragically short life. So his next port of call had been the Sussex Daily News archives, as this was a regional local newspaper with records from the time and could be accessed from the British Library. It did not take long for him to find what he was looking for.
The Friday September 24th edition had a paragraph on page 5 under the heading ‘Two Deaths On Seaford Head’. It was dispassionately factual and brief, but in no way what Marlo had been expecting:
“The death of Miss Lillian Jones of Brighton, twenty years of age, has formally been announced following her disappearance after a fall from the cliffs during a storm near Seaford on Wednesday. Her attempted rescue by her companion Mr Walter Threadwell ended in tragedy as he was unable to save her. She fell into the sea and was washed out in a heavy swell, and searches by police yesterday were unsuccessful in finding her. Her death in the prime of her life has caused much grief for her family and great sorrow in her neighbourhood. The police are investigating in case foul play was involved. As her body has yet to be recovered the funeral date will be announced in due course. In a singular coincidence, yesterday also saw the discovery, a few hundred yards from where Miss Jones fell, of the body of a man. The name of the man is not yet known. A coroner’s report is awaited but police advise that the man’s death was suspicious. It seems possible that the two deaths are linked but no-one has yet been able to suggest how this might be the case. Mr Threadwell has been helping police with their enquiries but as yet no charges have been brought and the police have advised that they have no reason to suspect him at this stage.”
So she had died violently, and in unusual and mysterious circumstances given that the death of another man appeared to be involved too. Marlo sat back, slightly stunned. The diary was an even more poignant legacy then, those last words of Sept 21st holding an unknown portent of what was to come.
The following Monday’s edition confirmed the name of the dead man as Jed Attleborough, a drifter, and revealed that the cause of death was by ‘stabbing with a knife’. This was another surprise and gave an added twist to the mystery.
Really intrigued now, he painstakingly searched through all of the following editions for the year but surprisingly found no further mention of Lillian, Walter, or Jed. This seemed odd, as surely they would at least have reported on the questioning of Walter, the conclusions of the investigations into any foul play, the funerals of Lillian and Jed, and any potential murder trial. Yet there was nothing, it was as though it had all been brushed under the carpet. Something didn’t seem right.
With a combination of melancholy and still unrequited curiosity, Marlo had headed home with a new sense of purpose. And that purpose was to tell the story of Lillian Jones.
There were a lot of things he did not know about her, most of all, of course, what actually happened on that fateful last day that caused her to fall and whether the other dead man had anything to do with it, but the diary had allowed him to inhabit her world for nine months and so he had a strange irrational feeling that he could almost sense what was to come even if he could not prove it. He was going to do his best to describe what actually happened on the day she died, and if he got it wrong or was not entirely factual with the rest of her story, no-one would be complaining - this was what he liked to call a ‘factually imagined biography’, not a documentary. Marlo had complemented the descriptions in the diary by doing lots of research on what life was like in Victorian Brighton, both online and in visits to libraries and museums, so he hoped that at least there he had been historically accurate.
The first chapters of the book had introduced Lillian and her family and set the scene for their daily life running a small but well-frequented hat shop on Challenor Street. Business was steady and good enough to provide a living, but no more than that. Lillian helped out in the shop whilst also assisting her mother in looking after William and Alice, who were fourteen and ten respectively. She began a relationship with Walter in late July and Marlo had followed Lillian’s description of their blossoming romance through August and September, to the point where she was confiding in her diary that she felt Walter might be ‘the one’, even though she had not known him that long, and that she hoped that he may be considering a proposal.
Walter was five years older than her and all Marlo could glean about him from the diary was that he first approached her in a tavern when she was in the company of her friend Edith, he was tall and dark with thick black hair, bushy eyebrows and a large nose which gave him a distinctive yet quirkily handsome air, and that he worked for an accountancy firm, regularly making use of the firm’s horse and trap to come and visit her, as he lived on the other side of town. Apart from that, Lillian’s diary described mostly what they did together, where they went, and her romantic feelings for him. It sounded as though he had swept her off her feet. Marlo wondered whether this was her first serious boyfriend, as prior to that she had made no mention of any others, and this could explain why she was so besotted with him.
And now Marlo had reached the point, on September 22nd 1886, where, having spent the day journeying all the way along the coast and across to Seaford in the horse and trap, the couple had headed up to the Seaford Head cliff for an afternoon stroll, the plan being to then take a late afternoon tea in Seaford town before heading back to Brighton, ideally arriving as dusk fell.
But it had not worked out as planned, and Marlo had now described how, as they hurried back along the cliff tops, caught out by a sudden storm, Lillian had gone to have a closer look at the crashing waves and stumbled near the edge, slipping and falling off.
Marlo was pleased with his description of the fall but there were some challenges he had given himself. He presumed that the reason she and Walter had chosen to walk along the cliffs on a darkening autumn afternoon was to watch the sunset, but he had described Lillian’s fall as being in the middle of a raging storm. Why would the couple have set off for a cliff walk if a storm was coming? That didn’t really make sense. He also had to better explain why she had been close enough to the cliff edge to allow her to fall, and what caused her to stumble. And then there was that rope - it seemed very unlikely that Walter would have conveniently found a rope lying close by just when he needed it, particularly one over 80ft long. Maybe he should rewrite this section without mentioning a rope. He sighed. This whole part of the story was hard. He might have to ease back on the drama in order to work in some realism.
He got up and walked over to the window of his 14th storey East London flat. The sun was pulling the last vestiges of warm light with it over the horizon and a damp darkness was moving in and taking over. Glittering meshes of window lights and street lamps were multiplying in the city below, repainting the greys of the day with yellow, white, and black. 'That's enough for one day', he told himself. 'Sort it out tomorrow. Time for food'.
A rummage in the lukewarm fridge confirmed that he had given too much thought to his novel during the last few days and not enough to food shopping. He dined that evening on 6 slices of garlic sausage, a tub of ripening cream cheese, and a shrivelled apple, and the following day was pleasantly surprised that he was not ill.

2020.09.14 18:12 HireMeThrowaway2020 My parents have 2 houses, which will be left to us in the sad future - is it worth us seeking a mortgage still? (More context inside)

My wife and I have been saving for a mortgage. We're currently struggling on the income side (after both being freelancers), but have saved a decent £30k so far as deposit, which we know still needs to be much larger if we want to be near all our family here in Greater London.
My mum inherited a house from her Uncle a few years back when he passed, so now my parents own two properties - one where they currently live (mortgage free) and a second in the same area. Then, due to unfortunate circumstances, just before lockdown, the wife and I moved into that second house, (despite it being very dated and needing a lot of renovations) where we're told we can stay until we get back up on our feet.
Both houses will be left to myself and my sister to split between us when my parents eventually pass, and today it's occured to me - is it worth us really struggling to get a mortgage, to buy a house that will have to be so far away from our family, if I'm going to inherit a house nearby in the future? Should we not just offer to rent the second property once back on our feet, so that someone can be there to look after it and even use some of the "deposit" money to help renovate it?
I've tried looking online for more on this, if people were in similar situations but it's hard to find anything that isn't just discussing renting from parents. I wanted to know if people were in a similar situation (parents have 2 houses, being left to you once they get the x-factor), would you still seek a mortgage?

2020.09.14 18:03 aggiegal23 Virgin Broadband Installation Sh*tshow!!!

I knew Virgin’s rep was bad, but this is ridiculous!!
Myself and 4 other Master’s students have moved into a flat in London’s east end. We first contacted Virgin about installing WiFi in mid-August. Our first appointment was set for September 5th. A few days before the 5th we got a message from Virgin saying the pushed our appointment back to SEPTEMBER 28th. We called them saying this was absolutely unacceptable as our classes are currently online and we needed wifi ASAP (always said in a polite manner, we’re not evil). After many calls to their general customer service line and many holds later, they promised us that they would do the installation on September 10th.
September 10th rolled around and a man arrives who was only equipped to handle the interior installation with the “box” which is actually part 2 of the process. He was actually lovely and explained that it was the second time he faced this issue where he cannot work until part one is finished. Even so, his explanation of everything showed the incompetence of himself and his manager. He gave us his personal number although that got us nowhere. Another call that day ended with arguments about our installation date being shown as OCTOBER 2nd. The engineer himself implied that all engineers have quite open schedules. How did we get a date almost an entire month after the original date???
September 11th-14th have been a nightmare. False promises of installation dates & follow up calls. Each day one of us has sat at home waiting, therefore giving up our weekend for a company that takes us as fools. We’ve had over 20 calls with them at this point. Majority of the people we speak to straight up lie to us. We know how the process works at this point and always ask for someone of more authority to bypass the white lies. We know they can do an emergency installation next-day. We know they must knock on our door to access our backyard for the external installation. We know there are means of contacting us before canceling our appointments.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Who can we contact in the UK for actual progress?
EDIT: No external work has occurred/can occur because no one qualified for such work has ever examined our flat.
2ND EDIT: We were informed yesterday (sept 15) that the exterior work is complete. They’ve moved our next appointment to September 22nd and owe us money for each day since our original appointment date. We were told we’re “priority” and that if any time slot opens up it’s ours.

2020.09.13 19:23 mie11004 Best way to meet single women in their 20s/30s in CT?

I'm 28 and live in New London county, and while I have been attending a MeetUp group for this age demographic, I've been wondering if there are additional methods to meet women that I'm unaware of. I've tried online dating but I don't even know if I've talked to an actual woman yet - all I seem to get is likely scammers asking for my credit card number in some way, such as various supposed camgirls asking me to watch their live show. I'm using Tinder, Hinge, and FaceBook Dating. I've never even had a gf before, and I'm getting worried that I've become alienated by my own contemporaries, that I'm a man who's been displaced in his own lifetime. I never even get likes from the single moms.
So, for example, are there any virtual speed dating groups I should know about? Or perhaps any other singles groups I should be aware of? It seems like a lot of them on MeetUp are for much older crowds, with the group that I am in being a somewhat uncommon exception.
I'm frankly worried about reaching age 30 without ever having a gf, and that I simply may not be good enough for the standards of today's women. I did make some recent changes to my dating profiles, so I don't mind posting them if you wanted to see them, but I'm afraid that the reason I'm unwanted is because women - at least in the context of online dating - want a man who either looks like a Hollywood actor, has money like one, or both; nobody swipes for personality or intelligence, and my first-hand experience is undeniable. Maybe meeting women in person could ultimately be much easier for me, but I'm just some 5'5" schlub who's currently a paralegal intern at CATIC. It also doesn't help that I'm autistic, albeit I seem to have a light enough case that you wouldn't really know unless I told you - I'd say it's milder than even most cases of high-functioning autism. I genuinely wonder if I'd have better luck trying to meet women in my county's Pokemon GO group...

2020.09.13 01:57 TheBackstreetNet How have you guys dealt with quarantine and social distancing?

I gamed a bit in London before COVID hit, but I've been the countryside in Ireland with no opportunity do do that since March.
I'm now going back to University for my final year and I really want to make the most of it. But it's hard with the social distancing restrictions and such. So what have you guys done over the past 6 months? Has it purely been online dating, or have you just done daygame, or are there some ingenious ways of meeting people that I haven't heard of?

Hi! Have decided to ask for advice here because I am semi-panicking and don't really know who else to talk to.
I am a male (22) from London. I discovered that I have phimosis as a young teenager and eventually went through the NHS process and referral about it. Back then the doctor was quick to recommend circumcision but we were apprehensive and instead I just tried to use lube oil and light stretching to pull my foreskin back. At this point I think I had the most severe phimosis (pinhole?).
Over the next few years there was really really slow progress and I preferred to not think about it and ignored the issue (not the best decision but I was so scared at the time). The doctor discharged me when I said that there was progress (he didn't even check properly) and that was it.
Fast-forward to around 19 when I finally was able to pull it back while flaccid past the glans. However when I did this the tightness underneath the glans is really intense and so I always quickly pushed it back over the glans to avoid paraphimosis occurring. Since then, even with using the steroid topical cream and an attempt at stretching there just hasn't been much progress at all. I've realised now the foreskin itself (just above the really tight ring) also does not look massively healthy. There's tiny spots, it's always been quite red and it just looks a bit scarred(?).
Since 21 I decided (especially as I am a virgin and waiting for someone special but at the point now I might want to get sexual with someone soon) that I was tired of it being so tight, being barred from sex, and just the anxiety it causes. So I went to the GP and kickstarted the process of getting it sorted, and of course I was recommended a circumcision (and prescribed steroid cream again when I asked). Since then, I am at the point where the foreskin only comes down a little bit on the glans when erect but still not all the way, and it is just very tight, so that it forms an hourglass figure. I also just naturally have a *lot* of foreskin (lol) so even when I am flaccid it extends quite far past the head of my penis. I've never understood how people get 2 fingers in to stretch because, even though it goes past the glans flaccid, I still just can't do that?? I still stretch by retraction and just pulling the skin at the tight ring part in opposite directions (which does hurt to do).
ANYWAYS (thanks for reading this far), it's been a year + corona, but now my circumcision is scheduled for 2 weeks from now and I have having MAJOR anxiety about the procedure. So many of the posts online and on reddit are about botched circumcisions, complications in healing, how supposedly any issue can be fixed by stretching (am I just not doing it right?!), people's lives being fucked up after, etc. etc. and I am just so so scared. I really am wondering is this a premature, irreversible decision, even though 2 GPs/and the urologist have just said to get cut and that would obviously sort all the issues. There's also the Q of can I trust an NHS surgeon or should I go private (but expensive)? People seem to laud stretching but I just feel like that's not working for me (although these 'Phimocure rings' have intrigued and confused me further). There are also loads of posts which are positive about their circumcisions too so overall it has left my so confused. Would love some advice on this!
(Also sorry if I sound like a mess, just got the call about the surgery date and it's so soon that it has thrown me off.)

2020.09.11 04:05 chimken- my twin flame story (very long)

Okay so first of all, I’ve never really written any stories before. Please excuse me if it’s messy, I tried to make it easy to read and understand. I’ve been working on this for the past 5 hours because my thoughts are always a mess but I decided to finalize it because it’s already 4 am and I have to wake up early tomorrow. Please feel free to leave some advice in the comments if you feel like helping. :)
So I guess I’ll begin the story with some background info. I’ve had a few men in my life before, I have been in a couple of unimportant long distance relationships when I was younger, I also have 2 exes and I’ve been dating my current boyfriend for over 4 years now so I’m not unexperienced when it comes to relationships/romantic connections. I also wanna mention that I love my boyfriend with all my heart and he was the first man in my life that made me realize that the saying ‘when you know, you know’ was real if that makes any kind of sense.
There’s this guy I’ve known for over 4 years. I’ve always thought he was good looking but he’s also 4 years younger than me and I’ve always just viewed him as a friend. Back when I met him online I believe I was 19 and he was 15, he’s also British but I live in Europe so I’m not too far from him, only about a two-hour flight away. I met him at the same time (on the internet) as my current boyfriend. It’s also worth mentioning that him and my boyfriend have been internet friends for as long as him and I have, they’ve never met though.
Recently, just in the beginning of this year, my friend decided to visit either my country or another European country (I forgot which one) and so he told me about it and asked for my opinion. I obviously suggested my country because I thought it’d be fun to meet up with him. When he told me all this I didn’t think anything of it, I legit just wanted to meet up with him as friends but I was also excited because we hadn’t met before that time and we’ve known each other for so long. He said he was gonna spend 3 days here so I thought we’d meet up just one time and that’s it.
So the day came, it was in the beginning of February when his flight landed and we met up the next day because he got here pretty late so he just went straight to bed after landing. I was so happy to finally see him and get to know him through real-life conversations. When we met, we hugged and then made our way to this donut place where we grabbed a donut each.
Right off the bat we clicked. It just felt like I could tell him anything. We talked the entire time we were together, there was no awkward silence, it just felt so natural with him and even when there was a bit of silence, it somehow felt like home, so peaceful.
Anyways, a couple of weird things happened on the first day. We left the donut store and as we were walking away from it I noticed that my bracelet came undone and almost fell to the ground. This is an important detail because I got this bracelet from my current boyfriend back in 2018 for Christmas. It has had some issues where it’d come undone many times in the past so my mom took it to a jeweler to get it fixed just a few months after I got it and it HAS NOT come undone ever since (I wear it 24/7 and we probably got it fixed in the spring of 2019). Back then I thought it was very weird but I didn’t think anything of it.
Later that day the second weird thing happened. So we’d already been hanging out for a couple of hours, we were both kinda tired and thirsty so we went into this little store downtown and bought some water and candy. As we were walking out of the store, he noticed a mother and her daughter who were also just coming out of the store we were in and he goes “No way! These were the people on my flight from the UK to here last night!”. That’s when I started to notice that something was definitely going on here. I mean come on, you can’t call that a coincidence! They could’ve literally been anywhere, the capital city is huge, even the downtown area!
When I finally got home around 11 pm I was ready to FaceTime my boyfriend (he knew about me meeting my friend and he was okay with it). He asked about how it went and while telling him the details, for some reason I just felt so vulnerable and also kind of empty. That’s when I realized how much I was missing my friend and I was wishing I was still hanging out with him.
After that day we met up twice more and honestly, we had the time of our lives exploring the city together. I thought he was so mature and I genuinely thought and felt that we were the same person. The entire time we were together, we were walking and sitting so close to each other, there was an unexplainable force that was pulling me towards him. I’ve never felt like this with anyone before, I’ve never felt so understood and so at ease with anyone. We had this amazing soul connection, I can’t even explain because you have to feel it in order to really understand.
Every night after getting home from spending time with him my heart felt so heavy and I just felt so empty, I was longing for him, I wanted to spend more time with him and have even more long and meaningful conversations. When we said goodbye on the last day my heart literally broke. We took two selfies and as we were saying goodbye we hugged and I just couldn’t hold my tears back. I cried for a bit and so he hugged me again and then said something like “We’ll see each other soon” and made his way back to his hostel. When he got back, he sent me the pictures we took on his phone through iMessage (which we never used prior to that day by the way) and said something along the lines of “just so you have these too”. My heart started beating so fast and I got a feeling that him sending me the selfies was the way he expressed his sadness since he kinda put on a poker face when we said goodbye.
The day after he left he woke up kinda late but we texted a lot, just talking about random things. We pretty much texted all day, back and forth. I still felt the very strong connection we had even just through texting and he also sent a couple of messages in which he was kind of hinting at liking me.
When it comes to this next detail, it’s important to know that when he was here, he held the door open for me wherever we went. We were talking about relationships (through texts) and so I asked him if he’s ever had a girlfriend and I still remember to this day the exact thing he replied with. He said “held the door open for you, especially for you”. When I read that text my heart nearly stopped, I didn’t know what to do with the information so I asked him what he meant and he pretty much just said that he referred to the times he held the door open for me and asked me if I liked it. I knew exactly what he really meant with his reply but I was still just trying to brush it off.
Eventually, around 1 am that night I couldn’t hold myself back and I told him everything, I told him how I felt about him and that those 3 days we spent together were the best days of my life and he pretty much told me the same thing. I was so happy I finally got it off my chest and I couldn’t believe he felt the same about me! We started planning our future right after that, it was so beautiful. He also told me that he mostly came to see me and not the city, because he’s had a crush on me since we met online and I thought that it was really sweet.
About a week after admitting our feelings and saying “I love you” we also started FaceTiming, he was just so nice to me and by the way he talked to me and treated me I could tell that he was an experienced soul. After work he would call me and our calls would be 4 hours long but they went by so quickly because we had so much to talk about, the next thing we knew it was 1 am and time to get some sleep.
Around the end of February I noticed that he was acting a bit strange and distant. He started to kinda ignore my messages and he was being cold. I was begging for an explanation, I wanted to know what went wrong, if I messed up or he just simply changed his mind that quickly. We scheduled what I didn’t know was gonna be our last FaceTime call (at least for now). If I remember correctly it was on the 25th of February.
We had a long conversation about our situation. He told me that he couldn’t do a long distance relationship as his first relationship and that he still loved me very much but wanted to stay friends. He said he was way too scared of hurting me if we don’t work out in the end. When we had just started talking in the beginning of the month, he also said that he didn’t feel the age difference at all and when we called for the last time, he used that as an excuse too, he said 4 years was too much.
To be fair, I think these were all just made-up excuses, I think he got scared of the powerful connection we share. He’s definitely scared of loving someone and being loved back. I think he doesn’t feel worthy of love, I know he had a tough childhood but I just wish I could show him how much I really do love him and that if he chooses me I’ll be there for him forever. We haven’t talked since I wished him a happy birthday back in April. I have been so scared to reach out ever since. He also removed me from instagram in the beginning of August and to be honest it didn’t phase me back then but also I was kinda bummed that he didn’t text me for my birthday in mid August. I still have his number and e-mail address but I feel like if he wanted to reach out he would’ve already done it by now. I’m not sure if I should be the one to break the silence.
I feel like he only came up with these excuses because he wanted to choose for me. He thought that if he disappeared from my life it’d be easier for me to make a decision.
Despite him leaving me out in the cold, I know that he’s a very caring and loving person deep dow. I knew it from the first time he looked at me. I don’t think anyone has ever looked at me with such curiosity and love in their eyes.
I guess I’ll also talk about my relationship with my boyfriend during the quarantine months because it has some important details as well.
So after my friend left I was feeling so confused, I didn’t know what to do. It was a constant struggle for me to choose from the two men I love so much. My mom reads cards so I asked her what they said about each man but before she used them, she basically just gave me some motherly advice about how I should be with someone that’s 100% sure about wanting to be with me long term and would also make a good husband/dad.
The cards said that either man would be a good choice, I’d have a happy life no matter who I chose but it’d be very different because they both love and view me differently. Then I asked whether I’m right about me and my friend sharing this very deep connection and the cards said that it’s all true and that we were a couple in a previous life so we share this unbreakable bond. I had another question, it was about whether my boyfriend had developed a stronger connection with someone else and the cards said yes which caught me off guard because I thought the answer would be a definite no.
So the truth is, my boyfriend doesn’t believe in card reading and he doesn’t like when I ask about our relationship and he made it clear back in 2016 when we had just started dating so I promised I would never ask about us again from the cards and I kept my word up until February this year and I didn’t think it’d be as harmful as it turned out to be.
So I did the reading and my boyfriend asked me about what I’d been up to because I was gone for a while talking to my mom so I ended up spilling the beans. I told him about asking the cards about him and I again. I was so mad at him for what the cards said but I was clearly just projecting my own complicated situation onto him which he didn’t appreciate at all and we had a huge fight. When we both calmed down we eventually decided to take a week-long break from contacting each other to clear our heads. This was the time when my friend was starting to act more cold towards me. I was so lost, I couldn’t think straight and my life completely fell apart, it was like the rug was pulled out from under me and I ran back to my boyfriend thinking that my friend made a decision for me so I don’t have to worry about deciding anymore.
Things with my boyfriend went well for a few days when he suddenly told me that he couldn’t really go back to how things were after I broke his trust by using the cards again. From that day I was so focused on him and getting him back. I did everything I could just to be with him again. It took about 3-4 months before he could make a final decision about whether he wants to give me another chance or not. Just to clarify, my boyfriend has a lot going on in his family right now, a couple of deaths and some sick people so I think that all of those things played a part in him taking his time making a final decision about us.
When he finally took me back I was so happy, I’d been manifesting it for months using all sorts of techniques! We’ve been together again since our July monthiversary. I’ve been super happy with him and I’ve had a crazy amount of anxiety about my boyfriend finding out that I have feelings for my friend since they’re friends too. I didn’t really care about my friend as much anymore, I was super focused on improving my relationship with my boyfriend up until about a month ago. We're together and I still love him so much and care about him with all my heart, he's seriously the best, but right now my heart is so torn between these two men.
So about a month ago I came across a stream on twitch about this guy exposing scammers. He was streaming with his friend and as soon as his friend started speaking, memories came flooding back. He sounded almost exactly like my friend. His accent, his voice, everything. I had a very hard time falling asleep that night and he’s been on my mind ever since. A few days after the stream, I met my best friend from high school and I finally plucked up the courage to tell her about what happened to me back in February. It was so good to let it all out. She didn’t judge me, she was so understanding. I just couldn’t tell you how amazing it felt to talk about it with someone other than my own mom. Also, ever since these feelings have come up again, I’ve been seeing 1111 and 111 a crazy amount, in videos, on the clock, in games, just browsing the web, it’s honestly starting to become kinda boring.
I’m just having a hard time believing that it’s over. He was so serious about me, he said he would visit me as frequently as he could and he was even planning on telling his mom about us! We had plans of me going to his birthday party in April or him possibly coming here to visit me in March. We were planning on moving in together in a year or so, we were even looking into how it’d be possible for me to move to the UK now that it’s no longer a part of the EU. We talked about kids, we talked about how cool it’d be that they’d be citizens of 3 countries (he moved to the UK when he was just a few years old but he’s also a British citizen).
Honestly meeting him really opened my eyes to spirituality. I grew up in a very spiritual family but I never really got involved in it. In 2019 I realized there were free tarot videos on YouTube and I watched a couple but I never really got into it because it didn’t interest me at the time, however in a lot of the videos, readers kept talking about “twin flames”. I had no idea what that meant, I never really looked it up either because I didn’t care to know. I only truly realized what it meant after I met my twin flame.
When we admitted our feelings to each other, the term “twin flame” just randomly popped into my head like a hint in a video game or something. It came out of nowhere and so I looked up what it meant. I was shook to find out that a lot of the things on the list applied to our relationship. When we both agreed on how strong out connection is I just told him that I thought we were twin flames! He didn’t know what it meant so I explained and he did tell me that he felt like we had a very strong bond as well, something he’d never felt before.
Right after meeting him and recognizing our bond, I started seeing a crazy amount of angel numbers which I didn’t even realize in the beginning. I started to write the numbers down but eventually I just gave up because it was way too much and way too frequent for me to be writing them all down.
There were a couple of other interesting things that have happened since we haven’t been in contact. For this next bit it’s important to know that my friend was working in this specific town in south London I’d never heard of before he told me about it. About a month ago I got a leopard gecko and I ordered a couple of things that I needed to put in his enclosure including a bag of jungle substrate. When it got delivered to my apartment I was curious about what other products this particular brand had for sale so I typed the name of the substrate into google and hit search. When I saw the third hit I was shook. A hit with a reptile store came up which is in the SAME TOWN as his workplace! The title literally said the name of the town.
There was another interesting “coincidence” that happened as I was scrolling though the LoA Reddit when I had just made my account back in the spring. As I was saying I was just scrolling through the subreddit when all of a sudden his name popped up. It was a post about an author that had the same first name as my friend. Since he comes from a country where they speak an entirely different language, his name is not the typical English name, although to my understanding it’s common in the country he comes from. Still, it was strange to see his name pop up like that.
After he kinda ghosted me I started getting into meditating and I was on a mission to get my boyfriend back so I was manifesting like crazy. That’s when I realized that the Law of Attraction really works. Lately I’ve been struggling when it comes to it though because I don’t know what to manifest. I just don’t know how to go on with my life. What do I want from it? I have no idea.
It’s not easy because my current boyfriend is everything I’ve been looking for in a romantic partner, he’s open about his feelings, he doesn’t like other girls’ bikini pictures out of respect for me and he’s dedicated to our relationship, whereas my friend follows tons of instagram models, I think he even has a folder of all kinds of nudes on his computer. I also know that he has a big crush on this one particular model that I’ll never measure up to. My friend’s also slim and I’m about 176 lbs. I had a slim boyfriend before and I never really felt like he 100% loved and accepted me. I told my friend about what I was looking for in a relationship, that I want it to be very serious and I think I scared him away with all I had to say. I don’t wanna make him sound like a jerk because I think his soul is truly beautiful and unique, it’s just that he acts different when he’s around his friends if that makes sense.
Honestly I’ve been struggling in the past month, however writing my story has helped a lot already. I don’t know if I’ll ever know for sure if he’s my twin flame but I really do feel it in my heart that he is. I feel like he’s with me all the time in the 5D and I know what we have is not over yet, I can just feel it. I know I’ll see him again someday.
It’s also kind of strange that just as I was starting to write this story, I got a notification from travelocity, a travel app that I never use because I haven’t really needed it since January. I’ve never gotten a notification from it apart from check-in notifications. As I was starting my story, a notification came up and the title read “Green Light”. I don’t know if it means anything or I’m just trying to find meaning in everything I see.
Anyways, V, if you happen to find and read this I just want to say that I appreciate that you showed me the real you when it was just us two. Thank you for exploring the city with me, those were the best 3 days of my life. I hope maybe one day we can be more than just friends. I miss your voice, your personality, your entire being. I don't hold anything against you.
“If it feels right it’s probably right.”

2020.09.11 00:24 TheRazorX ...in which civilian oversight is now a bad thing "Cause Trump"

I rarely post essays.
As someone who's lived in other parts of the world, I've been watching events unfold with a severe dread that surpasses Trump's worst desires (or projected desires).
The thing I fear, is not Trump "winning, it's not Biden "Winning", it's not even directly related to the election itself, rather it's summarized in Friedrich Nietzsche's famous quote;
He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.
This quote while widespread is often ignored or dismissed as a side point, however I've long since come to the conclusion that the intense polarization is intended as a feature not a bug, and Trump is just merely a tool in the plan that has been underway for decades.
We've reached the point where BOTH Republicans AND Democrats (speaking of actual regular voters, not politicians or bots, or those minorities on either side that were already "extremists");
Myself and thousands of others that have traveled or lived in "less free" parts of the world have constantly warned of the similarities of the "But Trump" Boogeyman strategy, and of the dangers of this strategy coming to fruition, people from those regions have spoken the warnings clearly in English and of course we're ridiculed attacked and most importantly ignored.. Because "it can't happen here". Furthermore, the truth is, we've seen many "Trumps" before in recent times.
Anyone that has ever looked at any "Authoritarian" country, recognizes a very simple fact; People enable and allow said tyranny. Consent of the Governed is in fact given to both Democratic leaders and Authoritarian leaders.
In each and every one of these countries, no matter how despicable their leaders, they always manage to find support out of a fear of one or many "Boogeymen". In MENA, the holy trinity of Boogeymen is; The USA, Israel, The Muslim Brotherhood. And depending on which part of MENA, either Iran/Saudi.
Anything and everything wrong with the country, is the fault of one of those Boogeymen, and as a result quite a few people will hate their leaders openly, know they're corrupt thieves, murderers, pedophiles...etc but still back them because at least they're "protecting us from X". They'll be outraged at whatever crime the regime commits against the people, but willingly eat up the pro-regime propaganda because "They were trouble makers that deserved it" or "They were agents of Israel/USA" or "This is a plot by Israel/USA/Iran/Saudi"..etc. The list goes on and on and on. So much so that a common "twisting" of Karl Marx's adage on religion is "Israel is the Opiate of the Arabs", a concept naturally twisted by pro-Israel parties to deflect away from Israel's actual crimes, using typical "Whataboutism"
Sound familiar?
There's no doubt those "Boogeymen" are scary and regularly commit crimes. But the fact that someone commits crimes, has never ever meant that others have not themselves committed crimes. But they want you to think that, or even worse, they want the crimes of said Boogeymen to excuse the crimes of those in their own tribes.
There's a very real reason the astroturfing efforts are focused on "So you want Trump to win?" and "So you're voting for Trump?" type messages when trying to "convince" voters to back Biden that are skeptical. So much so, they haven't even bothered to pretend otherwise. They want binary.
There's a very very VERY good reason that Bernie said we need a global progressive front, and that Yanis Varoufakis agreed., What we're seeing happen in the USA, we saw before in multiple countries. They understand that with corporate authoritarian power going multinational and coordinating on an international basis, we need an international front to fight it, and not just focus on "local" stuff, because as I'm trying to point out, you end up seeing the same tactics happen elsewhere because even those that bother to pay cursory attention think or say "it can't happen here", or more importantly, even if they do understand the possibility of it "happening here" only see it in the light of tribalism, where only "The other" is willing or capable to bring it to fruition.
We're now at the point where civilian oversight of an election is considered a "bad thing" by "Liberals", "cause Drumpf", this isn't the first (or even last) time I've heard something similar. For example, it's anecdotal, but a friend reported once that during a conversation, a very liberal and otherwise "normal" but very "Dem" co-worker mentioned that she found it "extremely creepy" that a Bernie supporter was video taping her counting votes at a precinct in 2016 when she was a volunteer poll worker. She obviously wasn't a Bernie fan.

That is the bigger threat, that is the bigger "goal" that you can easily trace going back to 1971 or even 1933. This is the culmination of everything, including Trump and the Pied Piper strategy (A strategy they continue to repeat even though we've already seen and felt the real results of it on actual people, specifically the most disadvantaged); To effectively and gradually "guide" the populace into accepting tyranny and fascism, either out of exploiting their fears, or out of giving them a sense of self righteousness in which suppressing "the other" is for a "righteous cause" or "the greater good". They've slowly convinced a large group of people across political ideologies that "Stability is more important than Freedom", Something we've seen said before by Trump's "Favorite Dictator", causing a perception shift here in the USA that we're seeing happen in real time., largely mirroring the sentiment in "non-free" countries

You're either with us, or against us is now the rallying cry across the board.. one we've heard before even here in the USA, a message that when last we heard it, it was used to justify one of the worst crimes of the modern era
The intense polarization of America along acceptance of authoritarian tolerance is a feature, not a bug. To quote the pinned tweet of one of the aforementioned accounts;
“The junk merchant doesn't sell his product to the consumer, he sells the consumer to his product. He does not improve and simplify his merchandise. He degrades and simplifies the client.”
~William S. Burroughs, Naked Lunch
Multiple studies from reputable sources have sounded the alarm that faith in democracy is fading fast, but once again, no one is listening, even when "Liberal" favorites talk about it.
To give you an example of what I mean, folks wanting the government to "verify" news (to combat fake news), completely forget (or intentionally omit) the fact that the very same laws they're recommending have already been implemented in multiple countries and only benefit the ruling regime, who use them as just another tool to silence dissident. Furthermore, there are other methods of combating disinformation that don't erode civil liberties., but we rarely hear about them in public discourse, the choice we're always given is "Give up this right, or suffer the consequences".
And a crucial but (intentionally?) overlooked fact on the free-speech debate, starts cutting through all the fog;
“Constitutional protection should be accorded only to speech that is explicitly political,” he wrote. “There is no basis for judicial intervention to protect any other form of expression, be it scientific, literary or that variety of expression we call obscene or pornographic.”
But a transformative ruling by the Supreme Court five years later began to change that thinking. The case, a challenge to a state law that banned advertising the prices of prescription drugs, was filed by Public Citizen, a consumer rights group founded by Ralph Nader. The group argued that the law hurt consumers, and helped persuade the court, in Virginia State Board of Pharmacy v. Virginia Citizens Consumer Council, to protect advertising and other commercial speech.
The only dissent in the decision came from Justice William H. Rehnquist, the court’s most conservative member.
Kathleen M. Sullivan, a former dean of Stanford Law School, wrote that it did not take long for corporations to see the opportunities presented by the decision.
“While the case was litigated by consumer protection advocates,” she wrote in the Harvard Law Review, “corporate speakers soon became the principal beneficiaries of subsequent rulings that, for example, struck down restrictions on including alcohol content on beer can labels, limitations on outdoor tobacco advertising near schools and rules governing how compounded drugs may be advertised.”
That trend has continued, with businesses mounting First Amendment challenges to gun control laws, securities regulations, country-of-origin labels, graphic cigarette warnings and limits on off-label drug marketing.
“I was a bit queasy about it because I had the sense that we were unleashing something, but nowhere near what happened,” Mr. Nader said. “It was one of the biggest boomerangs in judicial cases ever.”
“I couldn’t be Merlin,” he added. “We never thought the judiciary would be as conservative or corporate. This was an expansion that was not preordained by doctrine. It was preordained by the political philosophies of judges.”
Not all of the liberal scholars and lawyers who helped create modern First Amendment law are disappointed. Martin Redish, a law professor at Northwestern University, who wrote a seminal 1971 article proposing First Amendment protection for commercial speech, said he was pleased with the Roberts court’s decisions.
“Its most important contributions are in the commercial speech and corporate speech areas,” he said. “It’s a workmanlike, common sense approach.”
Liberals also played a key role in creating modern campaign finance law in Buckley v. Valeo, the 1976 decision that struck down limits on political spending by individuals and was the basis for Citizens United, the 2010 decision that did away with similar limits for corporations and unions.
One plaintiff was Senator Eugene J. McCarthy, Democrat of Minnesota, who had challenged President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1968 presidential primaries — from the left. Another was the American Civil Liberties Union’s New York affiliate.
Professor Neuborne, a former A.C.L.U. lawyer, said he now regrets the role he played in winning the case. “I signed the brief in Buckley,” he said. “I’m going to spend long amounts of time in purgatory.”
To Professor Seidman, cases like these were part of what he describes as a right-wing takeover of the First Amendment since the liberal victories in the years Chief Justice Earl Warren led the Supreme Court.
“With the receding of Warren court liberalism, free-speech law took a sharp right turn,” Professor Seidman wrote in a new article to be published in the Columbia Law Review. “Instead of providing a shield for the powerless, the First Amendment became a sword used by people at the apex of the American hierarchy of power. Among its victims: proponents of campaign finance reform, opponents of cigarette addiction, the L.B.G.T.Q. community, labor unions, animal rights advocates, environmentalists, targets of hate speech and abortion providers.
Yet, almost all the discourse in free speech debates/"Cancel culture" is focused on anything EXCEPT the corporate aspect, and naturally ignores the only groups actually and truly at a disadvantage.. Joy Ann Reid's was never "cancelled" for her Islamophobia, bigotry, racism, antisemitism...etc , but was rather rewarded with a prime time show, and many of the same "liberals" applaud her regularly.
And obviously on the Right, none of them are "Cancelled" for any obvious transgressions.
It starts getting clearer when you realize what types of people are "agreeing" with each other on the subject, and who certain folks decided to target
All that paints a very clear picture; Only your rights should be revoked. "We" should be given a pass.
Side note; I also find it interesting how many twisted abuses can be traced back to the corporate response to Nader's (at the time) very effective citizen activism.. That was the pivotal moment. Which makes it all the easier to see how they so effectively managed to turn him into a pariah.
On a related note, Information warfare has been predicted to be the new major war front at least as far back as 1996, so this isn't something they just started thinking about in 2016, contrary to popular perception. Hell, an extremely popular anime talked of it in the early 2000s, and fictionally exhibited things we see in reality today.
Even Bin Laden, the infamous terrorist, understood the ramifications, and considered it a primary tenant of his "Death by a thousand cuts" strategy, although he was primary focused on inflicting economic harm.
And "we" walked right into it willingly. Why? Well perhaps this next quote will shed some light;
Richard Shultz, a professor of international politics at Tufts who’s long been a key national security state intellectual, wrote in 2004 that “A very senior [Special Operations Forces] officer who had served on the Joint Staff in the 1990s told me that more than once he heard terrorist strikes characterized as ‘a small price to pay for being a superpower.’
Again, the missed subtext is clear; Human lives lost in terrorism attacks (and increased radicalization due to US actions leading to more potential terrorist attacks) are a cheap price for global (and more importantly economic) dominance. By extension, one can assume that human lives lost to other corporate goals are also considered a "cheap cost".

This is NOT ok.

Speaking of radicalization and Al-Qaeda....
What did the founding fathers (that conservatives love to reference) think of stuff like this?
Abraham Lincoln warned in February 15, 1848, of the dangers of "Only I see and understand the danger, only I can protect you" type politics.
Allow the President to invade a neighboring nation whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such purpose, and you allow him to make war at pleasure. Study to see if you can fix any limit to his power in this respect, after having given him so much as you propose. If to-day he should choose to say he thinks it necessary to invade Canada to prevent the British from invading us, how could you stop him? You may say to him,—”I see no probability of the British invading us”; but he will say to you, “Be silent: I see it, if you don’t.”
The provision of the Constitution giving the war making power to Congress was dictated, as I understand it, by the following reasons: kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending generally, if not always, that the good of the people was the object. This our convention understood to be the most oppressive of all kingly oppressions, and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that no one man should hold the power of bringing this oppression upon us. But your view destroys the whole matter, and places our President where kings have always stood. Write soon again.
James Madison on Friday, February 8th, 1788 warned;
But the great security against a gradual concentration of the several powers in the same department, consists in giving to those who administer each department the necessary constitutional means and personal motives to resist encroachments of the others. The provision for defense must in this, as in all other cases, be made commensurate to the danger of attack. Ambition must be made to counteract ambition. The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions.
What's often missed, is the subtext of Madison's warning, and central to the thesis of this essay, clarifies that yes, Government is supposed to represent the will of the people (or what they're willing to tolerate), but what happens when "the people" are "guided" to a particular view? Why is propaganda so prevalent and effective? Why do we reject the very clear evidence and science that entire populations can in fact be "rewired" to a particular view?
In other words, combining the warnings of Nietzsche, Lincoln and Madison's warning leads to the conclusion that yes, if "properly guided" the people can be taught to "yearn for a king", something which again, we've seen happen in practice across the world.
In closing, while none of this information is new but we're reaching the apex of a long arc, and if you've read this and thought one or more of;
Then you're exactly part of the problem I'm warning of. I'm not saying vote for Trump, I'm not saying vote for Biden. I'm not saying to vote at all, or that voting actually has much to do with it in the first place.
I'm pointing out a very simple fact expressed once by Benjamin Franklin, and even though the context was endlessly butchered, the real context makes it far more relevant;
In January 1775 Benjamin Franklin (1796-1790) was part of an American delegation sent to Britain in an attempt to resolve the outstanding disagreements between the Crown and the colonies. Seventeen points were up for discussion of which several were rejected outright by the Crown while others were rejected by the colonies. Franklin’s comments regarding the last two points produced one of his most famous sayings from the period:
As to the other two acts, (i.e. 16. The American admiralty courts reduced to the same powers they have in England, and the acts establishing them to be reënacted in America; and 17. All powers of internal legislation in the colonies to be disclaimed by Parliament) the Massachusetts (sic) must suffer all the hazards and mischiefs of war rather than admit the alteration of their charters and laws by Parliament. ‘They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.’
The context explained in the analysis makes it ever more clear;
It is interesting to see where the main lines of disagreement lay between the colonists' delegation to London and the Crown in early 1775 which one would think would have been the last opportunity at some kind of reconciliation before independence was declared and war broke out. The sticking points for the Crown were the 8th, 11th, and 17th Articles which were declared to be “inadmissible” or were “refused absolutely”: “8. No troops to enter and quarter in any colony, but with the consent of its legislature. 11. The late Massachusetts and Quebec Acts to be repealed, and a free government granted to Canada. 17. All powers of internal legislation in the colonies to be disclaimed by Parliament.” The payment of back taxes might be negotiable but when it came to the stationing of troops or placing limits on the power of Parliament over colonial legislatures no compromise was possible without giving up political power. Franklin’s remarks about the trade offs between “essential liberty” and “a little temporary safety” seem to have been directed at those in the colonies who could see that further compromise was no longer possible by the Crown and that it was up to the colonies to cave in in order to maintain the peace. Franklin was urging them that to do this would be to give up the entire game and thereby scuttle any chance for real liberty and independence in the colonies.

The king is dead, long live the king.

TL;DR : Shit is fucked. Read it.

2020.09.10 13:28 TableIn How Are Worldwide Businesses Using Tablein in Different Spheres?

10 Features of the Reservation System That are Critically Appealing for Various Businesses Initially let’s make it clear why businesses are integrating the reservation systems in their business management. What are the key requirements for such tool? And, what features define an advanced reservation management?
Accurate Real-time Bookings. The reservation system is not equal to a request one. Thus, all the available dates, times and specific choices should be clearly visible on the booking calendar, and reservations – instantly confirmed. This automatic feature is extremely convenient both for the client and the service provider. Time –saving Channel Management. One of the most time-consuming, confusing and complicated tasks is to manage reservations coming from different business channels (websites, social media, apps). Thus, every reservation system must be capable of receiving the bookings from all those channels and synchronising them to a single calendar. Here’s a simple key to the smooth management and eliminated risk of overbookings. Clear Reporting. The booking calendar, occupancy rates, frequency according to the time (days/hours) or special offers, payment statuses, revenues and all the relevant data should be generated immediately and explicitly. Preferably, with just one click. Smooth Group reservation management. Many businesses report the issues emerging while managing group reservations. Fortunately, online booking systems allow to manage the reservations efficiently, saves time and eliminates the risk of mistakes. Triggering Special promotions and discounts. Despite the business sphere, discounts and promotions are always present. The reservation system, which allows the flexible display of them, is always desirable. Automatic communication. None of the reservation systems might be valued if the tool still requires additional manual work. Every communication back and forth with clients should be automated: let it be a booking confirmation, reminder or feedback request. It’s time-saving and convenient when managing not only the reservations but the business in general too. Convenient Client data management. Data about each reservation should be seen easily, and privacy requirements must remain high as well as secure. Moreover, the data should be easily accessible for all the responsible staff members (extremely important if the business is operating on a shift-change basis). Effective Workflow management. Where the business is related to people service, it is extremely important to foresee the awaiting flow and its intensity. It helps to manage the workflow, predict the required number of employees, order the necessary amount of products. One-click Prepayments. Flexible payment options are beneficial due to many reasons. They help to avoid no-shows, allow anticipating the guaranteed flow and simplify accounting. None of the clients should physically come to the place in order to make a payment. It’s such a time-saving tool for business employees! In case of force majeure situation, money could be refunded for the guest with just one click. Moreover, despite the country where the reservation system is being used, all the payments should be handled in local currency; thus, the choice must be existent. Multilingual management. Each business is willing the reservation system to be adapted to their mother tongue, so the choice of languages is critical. Moreover, the easy switch to a foreign language must be available too to become approachable for international clients. CUSTOMER STORIES How Tablein Meets All the Expectations of Desired Reservation System? Tablein was specifically created for small restaurants. However, all the functions listed above are fully operating, so the tool might be easily adapted to other spheres of business too.
In order to widen the whole perspective of flexible adaptability, we represent diverse worldwide businesses, which have chosen Tablein system for their reservation management!
Origami Studio: Origami Kids Cafe, Hong Kong, China One of the most prominent origami studios for kids in Hong Kong has chosen Tablein reservation system for their reservation management. Their primary purpose was to smoothly control the bookings of origami classes, workshops, playdates and parties. 4 times on weekdays and 5 ones on weekends are now available to reserve online up to 30 days into the future. Origami Kids Café positively emphasizes not only the organized reservation management but extremely efficient “Book Now” button on Facebook, linked to Tablein system too.
Ceramic Studio: Mátzalo, Sofia, Bulgaria Ceramic studio in Sofia is trending. People are gathering there for a creative time while designing the artistic clay pieces under professional supervision. Advance bookings are essential here, so opting Tablein for Mátzalo was crucial in their both reservation and business management. As the flow could now be foreseen, the ceramic studio can prepare decently with items and materials to always be in the best supply of choices. It is imperative both for a small reservation and a group one. Management of latter ones, let it be the birthday, team building, baby shower or individual classes, allows running the business in the smooth and organized manner. Especially if there are any changes in group size, time or date. If changes occur, the clients can easily make them online, and such modifications become immediately visible in the studio’s calendar. It’s time-saving, as no more responding to calls or replying to emails occur. Very convenient is a field of special requests too. If clients on the booking time enter any preferences, ceramic studio has time to prepare and fulfil them decently.
Sunbed rent: Kaluna Beach Club, Tenerife, Spain This exclusive beach club in Tenerife with panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean had chosen Tablein system for their sunbed reservations. The system is being used not only for date picks but for the specific options (VIP beds, cabins and VIP areas with Jacuzzi) and easy prepayments with various payment options too. A busy and desirable place opens a chance to be booked not only by locals but by foreigners who are only planning the vacation to Tenerife too. If any of the sunbeds or cabins are being taken by walk-in, the staff members can block this option in the system manually. As the calendar gets immediately updated, it reflects the real-time situation for the online clients.
Carriage rent: The Tea Terrace, London, UK Afternoon tea is a classic and idyllic experience in the real British ritual. The more authentic experience is promised, the more attractive it becomes. The Tea Terrace is extremely famous for its vintage experience. Guests here are being invited to sit not only next to regular tables but in charming Cinderella-style carriages too. Using Tablein system allowed boosting online bookings for the latter ones. At the reservation moment, which could be made 24/7 from any place in the world and instantly confirmed, guest is offered to choose a fairy-tale afternoon tea in one of four The Tea Terrace locations in UK (London Victoria Street, London Oxford Street, Guildford and Cobham). This place exploited many Tablein functions: set the fixed time for usage (1 hour and 15 min) and a maximum number of people (up to six). The usage fee which should be paid in advance at the time of booking was opted too. Moreover, they employed the option of making a so useful survey at the same booking moment (i.e., Did you know about The Tea Terrace before reading about our Cinderella carriages? Have you ever visited The Tea Terrace previously?). Moreover, Tablein allowed the smooth management of places operating in different locations. Without a need of physical presence, owners can observe the calendar of all sites and supervise their workflow from any location.
Themed Cocktail Experience: Themed Cocktail Experience, Edinburgh, UK The company, offering the themed cocktail experience events, has chosen Tablein system for the whole management of their reservations. Inspired by fairy-tales, books and famous TV series, it’s the only entertainment of this type in Edinburgh, so the popularity is obvious. The reservation system allows to automatically make both single and group reservations for different types of cocktail experiences for specific dates, times and locations.

2020.09.09 14:57 typical-contents The best socks for summer — Typical Contents guide

Preface:
This is the latest guide from Typical Contents, the “wirecutter for clothes”. We review categories of clothing to find the best item(s) in that category.
This guide focuses on finding the best socks for summer. We tested 20 pairs of socks, all of which were purchased with our own money.
Check out our previous guides on boxer briefs, plain t-shirts, low top canvas trainers, and rain jackets.
After researching dozens and testing 20 pairs of socks in a locked-down London heatwave, we found the Defeet Aireator 5″ D‑Logo (Double Cuff) to be the best socks for casual use in the summer heat. We also found the Balega Hidden Comfort to be the best running socks — regardless of temperature.

Best for casual summer use

DeFeet Aireator 5” D-Logo Double Cuff
Thin and airy yet substantial and hard wearing. A distinctive texture adds to their technical charm. Made ethically in the USA.
$14.99 from Amazon (US)
£13.99 from Wiggle (UK)
The DeFeet Aireator 5″ D‑Logo (Double Cuff) were thin and airy, yet reassuringly substantial-feeling socks. Their compressive fit and light material kept our feet cool in 30°C+ (86°F+), humid weather. They strike a balance between lightness of material and cushioning, with a more dense material on the underside of the foot. The DeFeet socks were the only light feeling pair of socks that didn’t become sheer when stretched over foot. The texture on the Aireator is peculiar, varying by panel, and has a coarseness and density not seen in other socks we tested. The texture does give them a technical edge that other socks didn’t have, and that may turn off some.
DeFeet are well known in the cycling community, and with those credentials comes a couple of features. They never fall down and are designed for a compressive fit to squeeze inside road cycling shoes. They are also hard wearing. I’ve seen pairs last more than a year with no significant signs of wear and tear, although the black band on our 1 inch model did fade somewhat after a few washes and wears.
The Aireator is available in a wide range of lengths, from 1 to 6 inches, in 1 inch increments. They are available in a dizzying variety of colourways and patterns. Many of these colourways are terrible and kitschy. Highlights include sushi, doughnuts, and a unicorn on a bike in space, lowlights include “do epic shit”, and “big balls.” However we strongly advise sticking with the solid options.
It’s hard not to like DeFeet as a company. They were founded in North Carolina in 1992 by Shane Cooper, who remains CEO today. The company is still independent today too. Defeet’s socks are manufactured in their own factory in Hildebran, North Carolina in the US. Their polyester is made from recycled plastic bottles, and they have made efforts to reduce the amount of water their polyester yarn dying process consumes (more information on their manufacturing and sustainability here). Their wool is local to the USA and fully traceable. More recently Defeet published an equality statement which, to me, didn’t smack of the corporate non-speak that we’ve come to expect from brands today.

Downsides

The Aireators aren’t perfect. Their thinness combined with their somewhat course texture means they don’t cope well on runs. 5 kilometre runs or shorter were passable, but longer than that resulted in some blistering — in my case on the inside of my foot. Don’t go running marathons in these.

Best for running

Balega Hidden Comfort
No matter how far we ran, and no matter the temperature, the Balega Hidden Comfort excelled. Amazing blister resistance and great cushioning, although a little on the thick side. Made in South Africa.
$14 at Amazon (US)
£13 at Wiggle (UK)
The Balega Hidden Comfort socks are an internet darling for good reason: They stood above all others as running socks in our testing. No matter how far we ran in them, they exhibited stellar blister resistance and comfort. They were reliable, and durable. I’ve had pairs for upwards of two years — two years of multiple runs and washes per week — and they’re still holding up well, except for some light pilling. If I am getting ready for a run I instinctively reach for the Balegas.
The Balegas are on the thicker side compared to many other socks we tested. So much so that we were initially a little put off. However, anything thinner we tested ended up giving blisters in longer or hotter runs. Although they are thicker, the compromise in thickness is ultimately worth the gain in cushioning and long-term comfort. The material wicked sweat well and dried out quickly after removing your shoes post run.
Balega manufactures their socks in Cape Town, South Africa. Beyond reducing water consumption by “up to 50%”, Balega does not appear to have made huge efforts in improving its sustainability. It’s also disheartening to see Balega is owned by a big company that is in turn owned by a private equity firm, but it’s hard to argue with a product this good.

What to look for

Material: The most important aspect and a defining factor of a sock. For socks worn in the heat, lightness and airiness are desirable. There are a large variety of materials used in socks such as cotton, wool, nylon, polyamide, and elastane among others. Cotten and linen do not perform well in hot, sweaty conditions, get wet easily and take a long time to dry. Given the more technical nature of many of these socks they tend to use synthetic fibres.
Cushioning: How much padding separates your foot from the (insole of the) shoe. The level of cushioning is inversely proportional to the thickness of the sock — the lighter the sock material, the less cushioning there is.
Blister resistance: A combination of cushioning, texture and density of weave/material and placement of panels on the sock (if any). This mostly came into play when it came to running, particularly in distances longer than 5 kilometres.
Sweat wicking: How well the sock removed perspiration from your foot. A key point of consideration for a pair of summer socks and a couple of other use cases such as wearing boots.
Time to dry: How fast the socks will dry if they get wet — mainly with sweat but also when they get washed. Especially relevant in summer.
Compression: How compressive or tight fitting the socks are. Striking a balance is hard — too loose and the sock falls down, too tight and it becomes uncomfortable.
Seams: Where different panels of the sock attach to one another. These seams can sometimes cause irritation if they are not high quality or are in awkward places where they will be felt on your foot. Particular attention should be paid to the toe box. This wasn’t an issue in most of the socks we tested.
Origin: Where the socks are made. Many premium socks are made in developed countries. Cheaper socks tended to be made in Asia. Socks’ origins were more diverse than our other guides.
Transparency: How forthcoming the company that makes the socks is about their factory conditions. Being made in a developed country doesn’t automatically mean a factory’s conditions are good, and being made in a developing country doesn’t necessarily mean their conditions are poor. We used Good On You, a fashion brand transparency directory, to augment our research.
Company history: Has the brand been bought and sold, or is it independent? If a company has been acquired, who acquired it, and what other companies are in the acquirer’s portfolio? All things equal, preference is given to independent brands.
Cut/length: How high the sock comes up on the leg. We looked at two main cuts: ankle and calf (or “crew”) cuts.
Aesthetics: Designs, graphics, logos, colours — we hate them all. Strong preference was given to socks with minimal details and available in plain colours.
Durability: Socks were worn on many walks of varying length, and on multiple 5 and 10 kilometre runs. They were washed on hot and air dried multiple times.
Price: Other than at the very cheap end, there was surprisingly little variation in pricing for mid to high-end socks. Most pairs tested fell between $12 and $20.
Purpose: Many socks are created with specific purposes in mind, such as running, cycling, hiking, and so on. We didn’t have preconceived notions about what purpose would work best for summer (casual use or sports use), so we tested a range.
Availability: We favoured socks in stock year round, that were part of a permanent collection, and available internationally. Notably a few brands were USA specific and were difficult to acquire outside the States.

How we tested

A lot has been written online about socks, so we started there. 6 subreddits provided most of the recommendations: malefashionadvice (post 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), running (post), advancedrunning (post), youshouldknow (post), cycling (post), and bicycling (post 1, post 2). We also researched what people were searching for on Google (mostly Nike). From these we compiled a short list of socks we wanted to buy and test. We bought every pair with our own money.
We weren’t sure what type of sock would work well in summer conditions, so we tried a range of different types of socks. That meant trying socks made for a range of different sports and purposes: running, cycling, hiking, etc.
We concentrated on two main cuts of sock, a mid calf (~5 inch) and an ankle cut. We tried to test at least these two from each brand, but that wasn’t always possible.
The socks we tested were worn on long and short walks in the London summer. Temperature varied wildly, but it did include a 35°C (95°F) heat wave! On these long walks, we judged how cool or hot feet felt, how comfortable feet remained over the course of the walk, and if there was any rubbing against the inside of the shoes worn. It should be noted that for the walking tests, socks were mostly worn with sneakers (specifically the Novesta Star Master — runner up in our best low-top canvas sneakers guide).
Socks were also tested for running on short to medium distances of 5 – 15 kilometres. If socks tested well at those distances, they were tested on longer runs of around 20 kilometres. For running, socks were primarily judged first for their blister resistance, secondly for their ability to keep feet feeling cool and thirdly for their ability to dry quickly after becoming wet.
Socks were washed multiple times in hot washes with detergent and fabric softener (probably against manufacturer guidelines, but who has time for that) and air dried.
All socks that were tested were rotated through over the course of two to three months, and continue to be tested today. We will update this guide if anything noteworthy comes up in the future.

The competition

The Balega Ultralight Crew socks are part of Balega’s lightest range, and they certainly were light and airy feeling on foot. They were comfortable on the foot, and had decent blister resistance (I actually ran a 5 kilometer personal best in them). Their lightness did make them feel less supportive than other socks, and they exhibited a strange, chemical smell out of the box but that faded after the first wash. Unfortunately, the Balega Ultralight Crew get a failing grade on aesthetics. They are horrendously ugly, with bizarre, pseudo-technical patterns on the foot area. At least these designs are relegated to the foot and remain mostly unseen with sneakers on. Make no mistake, this is a good, lightweight sock. But the sub par looks took them out of the running for us.
The CDLP Bamboo Socks came in a beautiful off-white colour and with minimal styling that really appealed to us. The bamboo material maintained a dry feeling even after long walks. Unfortunately however, the socks had an annoying tendency to fall down over time, giving them an untidy look, which was a deal breaker for us.
The CEP Compression Low Cut Socks 3.0 were unsurprisingly very compressive. They were on the lighter side of socks we tested. They didn’t have enough cushioning for decent length runs, and their blister resistance wasn’t great. They have their logo placed obnoxiously on the top of the (ankle length) sock, meaning half of the logo will peak over your shoe. Interestingly, the socks are manufactured in Germany, the only pair in our testing to originate from there. CEP is a subsidiary of a medical company called Medi, who specialise in compression wear for medical situations.
The Darn Tough Coolmax Vertex No Show Tab Ultra-Light Cushion is comparable in many ways to our top pick for best running socks, the Balega Hidden Comfort. They tested nearly as well as our top pick, and cost $1 more. They are thicker than we would have preferred in a sock for use in the heat, especially considering they are marketed as “ultra-light”. All that aside, they were very comfortable, quite compressive (in a reassuring way), well made, and dried quickly. If the Balega Hidden Comfort socks are out of stock, consider these instead.
Darn Tough’s Element Crew Light Cushion were some of the hardest socks in our shortlist to track down in Europe, being sold out almost everywhere. We found them thick for “light” socks, overly so for summer wear. They were thick enough that they could cause issue in some shoes, particularly tighter fitting sneakers. We liked their retro tennis sock styling though
The DeFeet Aireater 1″ Speede Sock was originally one of our top picks, being the lower cut cousin of our top pick. We later discovered that the availability of this model was poor in some areas. Additionally DeFeet do not appear to be offering this model in solid colourways anymore. For these reasons we removed it as a pick.
The Feetures Elite Ultra Light Running Sock – No Show Tab were incredibly tight fitting, especially considering we bought the large size, and when they come out of a wash you may think they will never fit on your feet again. But when you do squeeze your pins into these socks you’ll be greeted by one of the lightest socks in our testing. They are so light that every crevice and seam in your shoe will be felt. This means they offer essentially zero cushioning and blister resistance. They also had a frilly tab around the ankle opening which is meant to be used as a tab to pull on and off the socks but ends up making them feel akin to a little girl’s socks.
The Icebreaker Multisport Ultra Light Micro Socks were not available in white, which was a bit of a downer to start on. They are an extremely light and airy feeling sock that wicks sweat and dries very quickly. They did fit large, and we would advise sizing down (I am a UK10 and bought a large, but would advise a medium). In fact they are so light that I could plainly see my toes through the material when I wore the socks! This lack of material meant the cushioning left a lot to be desired, and worried us in regards to durability (although they have had no issues in our testing to date).
Alongside our running pick, the Inijiji Ultra Run No-Show are another darling of internet fitness communities. For those not in the know, they are toe socks, meaning each of your individual toes are wrapped in material, like a glove for your feet. This is said to prevent you from getting blisters. Personally I found the sensation of toe socks off-putting and strange. The sock material was high quality, with good blister resistance on par with our top running pick. The padding was good and the sock has a somewhat compressive feeling that was reassuring and supportive. Putting on the Inijijis was fiddly, and when taking them off I thought I was going to rip my toes off as they gripped my toes tightly. Additionally the toe sizing didn’t line up well with the length of my toes, some being too short and others too long (maybe I have weird toes though). Finally, and I would argue more importantly, they look terrible both because of the toe sock design but also because of the tacky graphics plastered on the sock. You will be judged for wearing these. Having said that, if you want to channel your big dad energy on a run, these are the socks for you.
The Muji Right Angle Rib Stitch Short Socks were a beacon of minimal design in a sea of overlogo-ed, over branded, garish socks. They have a beautiful, understated style. They look great. However we didn’t find them well suited to warmer weather, and they didn’t stand out in terms of quality or performance. Muji talk about how their socks have a “right-angled” design, but in practice the benefit was subtle at best. These socks are rock bottom in terms of pricing. But with this comes some questionable (or at least opaque) manufacturing practices. For reference, Good On You rates Muji as “not good enough” in its company directory.
The Nike Sportswear Essential socks were much too thick and warm for summer. Our feet remained hot from the moment they were put on and it was a relief to take them off. They also felt wet when feet were particularly sweaty. We did appreciate their retro and relatively minimal styling however. Due to misplacing the label the socks came with, we have been unable to determine the country of origin. Fashion transparency database Good On You rate Nike as “it’s a start”.
The Organic Basics SilverTech Active Ankle Socks were scratchy feeling and were sheer when worn (I could see my toes through the material), which quickly discounted them. However the branding, design, packaging and presentation were brilliant, and we loved the mission, sustainability and transparency that Organic Basics showed.
The best pair of tennis style socks we tested were the Organic Basics SilverTech Active Tennis Socks. They were much more comfortable and soft feeling than the other pairs of tennis style socks we tried. However they were too thick to recommend as a summer sock, and we feel cotton is a poor choice of material for this too. Organic Basics did an amazing job in presenting their brand and mission, which we are big fans of.
The Smartwool Phd Run socks are a medium weight sock we tested. They were too warm feeling for hot weather, although they were also very soft and dried quickly when wet. We really didn’t like the design on our pair: a red smartwool logo on the back at the top of the sock, and grey panels on the ankle and toe area really disrupted the otherwise white sock.
The Swiftwick Aspire One socks were a good all round pair of socks available in a huge range of cuff lengths. They were fairly light feeling, reassuringly compressive and comfortable, and had relatively restrained styling. The cuff is well designed with not excess material, and kept the sock up. The red “L” and “R” lettering on each sock is a nice detail. However the Switwick just doesn’t compare in terms of comfort or performance to our running pick, and wasn’t as comfortable as our casual pick.
The Uniqlo Pile Socks were some of the thickest in our testing. This gave them very high amounts of cushioning which was pleasant. However their material caused feet to sweat profusely and didn’t let out any of the moisture generated.
Uniqlo’s Pile Mesh Short Socks were thick and large fitting. The large fit meant they weren’t particularly comfortable when worn in tighter fitting sneakers. We found them to be quite hot feeling, causing feet to sweat more than usual and making the socks uncomfortable. As with Uniqlo’s other socks, we did like their minimal detailing and their affordable pricing.

Hey,
I play in a alt-rock band based in London and after a few years of hard hard work, we finally have our entire first album recorded!
We're incredibly proud of it, putting in loads of hours. I feel like we have the following bits in place: a) the tracks! the album! b) our band image (well photoshoot upcoming, but we have tonnes of really cool artwork that people dig) c) music video to be recorded in the next month
I think realistically we will look to release everything all together by January (maybe even an actual gig to celebrate if we can!).
My only question now is.. how do we get people to hear it? We've experimented with Facebook/IG ads and we've got a decent response (over 125k streams on Spotify to date), but we'd love to make more of an impact.
In reality we probably have £1,000-£2,000 to spend on promoting. What is the best way to do this? Keep investing in ads online? Contact labels/management (but who?) Pay PR representatives? Spend money on MusoSoup submissions to blogs/radio?
I'd love to hear people's thoughts - thanks in advance!
